folie and Eagle
Checked 4 October 2026
Eagle is a desktop asset manager for Mac and Windows. It keeps images, videos, fonts and design files in a local library you can tag, filter by colour and search.
folie is closer to Eagle than anything else on this list: one-time price, files on your own disk. The difference is that folie does one thing, interface screenshots, and fills in the details for you.
Side by side
| Feature | folie | Eagle |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A Mac menu-bar app. Press ⌘⇧7, drag a box over anything on screen, and the screenshot is filed. | A desktop library for images, videos and design files, with a browser extension and screenshot capture. |
| Price | $9 once at launch (first 100 copies), then $15. Two Macs $18, then $30. Three Macs $27, then $45. | $34.95 once, lifetime updates. One licence covers 2 devices. |
| Trial | 14-day refund instead of a trial. | 30-day full-feature trial. |
| Where saves live | On your Mac: a folder of PNGs and one SQLite file. | A library folder on your own disk, in a location you choose. |
| Platforms | macOS 14 or later, Apple Silicon and Intel. No iPhone, no Windows. | macOS and Windows. |
| How it organises | Each capture is read and filed automatically: component, style, typefaces, five colours, the text on it. | Folders, tags and colour search, done by you, plus an AI Search plugin for search by image or by meaning, run offline. |

Where Eagle is better
- It runs on Windows as well as Mac.
- It holds every kind of file, not only screenshots.
- A 30-day trial, and one licence already covers two machines.
- Its AI Search plugin is free and runs offline. folie's reading step needs a Claude key or a local model.
- It is mature, with a plugin ecosystem folie does not have.
folie is Mac only, has no phone app, does not sync between machines, and needs either your own Claude API key (about a tenth of a cent a capture) or a model running on your Mac.
Where folie is different
- You do not tag anything. A capture arrives filed as, say, a pricing table in an editorial style.
- With the Chrome extension, the typefaces come from the page's own CSS, not a guess.
- It reads the text on every capture on device, so you can search for a headline you half remember.
- Insights and Rediscover show you what you keep coming back to, and bring old saves back one at a time.
- It is cheaper for one Mac: $9 at launch, $15 after.
Which one to pick
If you are organising a whole design archive, across file types or on Windows, Eagle is the stronger tool. If your library is mostly screenshots of websites and apps and you never want to tag one by hand, folie is built for exactly that.
